In the DUNE universe, Fremen Crys knives are made with the tooth of a Sand Worm, but a close aproximation to this resulted in a too soft looking knife, so we decided to make it with a metallic look to make it a bit more agressive.
Another concept I liked to graphically reproduce was the rich content about spies, treason, and plans within plans. Dune politics look to me like a mechanism full of gears that are always aimed to achieve the power through the spice. The pure spice is described as orange, but I prefered to add refined spice, that is..blue color, like the Fremen eyes. |

This abstract design was intended to represent the desert and the spice as the heart of the whole DUNE universe. It was originally set for the backcover. We did it in several colors and flavours. Most of them were dropped in the early stages of the project, but still worth to show one.
Finally, the very center of the DUNE universe itself, the planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. We all considered that the planet should be present in the bookcover.
